I hold no brief for Rupert Murdoch but I ask the question, if the unions had been more conciliatory, could more have been saved from the carnage? And what will save print from the internet anyway? As we were told and what we negotiated on was based on this you will have to make your own mind up.
I was the sun / now health and safety rep for the foundry ( plate casting Dept).
As discussed with us there was to be no origination at Wapping - the stereotype moulds for the plates to be cast from were to be taken to Wapping by van. We were looking at 13 new jobs being created to staff both Wapping and Bouverie St.
The chapel committee were invited to view the foundry at Wapping which we did. We were asked to make suggestions as to the final placement of the 3 Linotype and Machinery "automatic" plate casting machines. These 3 machines were unique in Fleet St,. as they were a common molten metal pot with two plate casting units attached. This would have given in effect six plate casting machines, which is one more than Bouverie St. had.
There was to be a seventy ton master metal pot that the used plates from the press room came back into the foundry on a conveyor belt with the newly melted metal being piped to the plate casting units. Our terms and conditions remained the same and we were ready able and willing to man both plants. I cannot speak for other departments as I was not involved.
