Does anyone know what Shuckers' spaceband or folding wedge looks like and what was its' use. A photo would be great.

Wayne Messell, the mechanic I worked with restoring the C4, tracked down the Shuckers' spaceband patent. Or is it Mergenthaler's original?. It was designed specifically for the Linotype machine.

If you look at the drawings you will see the attorney is Dodge who was a director of Mergenthaler Linotype. Makes you wonder.

QuoteMy invention has reference to a mechanism for justifying type dies or matrices, and is intended more particularly for use in what is now known as the Mergenthaler linotype machine, in which a series of matrices representing individual characters are assembled temporarily in line and the line thereafter justified and presented against the open face of the mold in order to produce raised type on the edge of the bar or linotype formed in the mold.
