Unit shift explained

Late composition caster manuals are surprisingly hard to find, so chances are that if you have a machine with unit shift, your manual won't cover it at all.

Only the 1966 and 1970 books can feature this system. The former is 4th print of an earlier manual, which means it hasn't been updated to feature the recent developments. That would leave us with the 1970 book, and I haven't been able to spot the volume 1 of it (only vol. 2 here and there on eBay, and John has it too - it's mainly a book of plates with no actual text).
