Mary Ann Shadd launched The Provincial Freeman in 1893 and became the first Black woman in North America – and the first woman in Canada – to publish and edit a newspaper. To avoid alienating readers accustomed to male editors, Shadd initially kept her name off the masthead. However, she grew tired of the assumption that she was a man and in 1854 revealed her identity.

Francysk Skaryna was a printer and publisher of the first printed book in the Belarusian language. He printed the first book in 1517, which is called The Bible of Francysk Skaryna.


The first two stamps show The Psalter and the the title page of Skaryna's Bible

The Francysk Skaryna Medal is awarded to Belarusian and foreign citizens for outstanding professional achievements in the fields of science, education, and culture; for great personal contribution to the preservation and enrichment of the Belarusian cultural heritage
