Mathilde Franziska Anneke (1817-1884)

Mathilde Anneke, along with her husband Fritz, had started the Neue Kölnische Zeitung. When it was halted by the official censors she began her own revolutionary Frauen-Zeitung, the first feminist women's newspaper in Germany. In 1849 they emigrated to America where in March 1852 she founded the first feminist newspaper in the United States (in Milwaukee) the Deutsche Frauen-Zeitung (German Women's Newspaper), earning, in the process, the harsh rebuke of male printers who organized against her.
