Statue of Hakob Meghapart, Yerevan, Armenia

The statue of the founder of Armenian printing, Hakob Meghapart (XV-XVI centuries) is located on Isahakyan Street, in front of the Press Committee building, Yerevan.

Meghapart is sculpted on a smoothly hewed granite pedestal in a standing position, his right hand is resting on a printing machine, and in his left hand he is holding a first ever published book in Armenian, the "Friday Book" collection of prayers and wishes (1512).

On the right edge of the sculptural composition are depicted 5 books in Armenian published by Meghapart, below which is depicted his seal with a cross and Latin letters D, I, Z, A (Dei Servus Iakobus Zanni Armenius which means "Servant of the God Hakob Tsanni Armenian"). Near the depicted stamp is inscribed: ARMENIAN FIRST PRINTER. 1512, in the lower part of the cover: HAKOB MEGHAPART.

The statue was erected in 1987, when Soviet ideology started to back off and other nations under the Soviet rule were allowed to remember and recognize their national heroes.
