During the two world wars there was a shortage of coins and banknotes in Germany and Austria due to the expansion of German territories and there not being enough physical cash to meet the demand of new users. As a result of the cash shortage, the state bank allowed individual towns to cities to print their own banknotes and mint their own coins. They were called notgelds or "emergency money" which is the literal translation from German.

Following on from post number 3 on page 1, Gutenberg's statue appears on the front of this 50 pfenig note issued on January 1921 in Mainz

Gutenberg appeared on a cinderella advertising stamp issued by the J. G. Schelter & Giesecke type foundry (Schriftgießerei) of Leipzig, Germany.The stamp dates to the Weimar Republic period.



Leipzig was a major international center for the printing and publishing industries, and Schelter & Giesecke was one of Germany's most prominent type foundries.
