Doug Wilson's still doing research for his forthcoming book all about the Linotype machine.

According to some promotional material that Doug has recently discovered Linotype were "Making a Simple Type System of Forty Symbols out of the Chaos of Forty Thousand Ideographs" to reproduce Mandarin speech in print.

The pamphlet describes how the system works and shows a picture of a Linotype Model 8 which was "commonly used for setting Chinese Phonetics."
