This booklet, Concerning Some Words by Beatrice Warde & Types by Varied Hands, consists of quotations from the writings of Beatrice Warde, each quotation here printed in accord with the design of a different printer, all to commemorate a visit to the United States by Mrs. Warde during May of 1953. The booklet, in its entirety, was printed by John Anderson of The Pickering Press, Maple Shade, New Jersey, in April 1953.


The booklet, which measures approximately 6 inches wide by 9 inches tall, contains 28 unnumbered pages that are staple-bound in tan stiff paper covers with lettering on the front face and the logo of the Lanston Monotype Machine Company on the rear face. The booklet is in fine condition.


The illustrations accompanying this description show the front cover, the introductory text summarizing Beatrice Warde's relationship to the world of printing, and three 2-page spreads showing the "words" of Beatrice Warde on the right as printed in accord with the design of the printer identified on the left.


Beatrice Lamberton Warde (September 20, 1900 – September 16, 1969, née Beatrice Becker) was a twentieth-century writer and scholar of typography. As a marketing manager for the British Monotype Corporation, she was influential in the development of printing tastes in Britain and elsewhere in the mid-twentieth century and was recognized at the time as "one of the few women typographers in the world". Her writing advocated higher standards in printing, and championed intelligent use of historic typefaces from the past, which Monotype specialized in reviving, and the work of contemporary typeface designers.
