This is an excerpt from a much longer video made on the 30th November 1992 to commemorate the last day of the Oakland Tribune.

The video was over an hour long and shot in poor lighting conditions.

The first clip just shows the hat making, the second is the full hour.

I made one of my great grandchildren wearing one as a New Year card a number of years ago. Now for safety reasons they wear ear protection and hard hats, when they need to enter press room. Mostly now large presses are operated from a quiet room.

Paper makers wearing 'printer's hats' although they would have probably called them 'paper-maker's hats'

This painting, said to be from 1810, is of Marchant Warrell, who was the first 'paper-machine man' (a man in charge of a paper-making machine) and worked for the Fourdrinier brothers at Two Waters Mill in Derbyshire, wearing a Workman's Hat.

This woodprint of a papermaker is taken from 'Artificiana A Guide to the Principal Trades' which was published by Oliver and Boyd in Edinburgh, 1820.

Even Gutenberg wore one. This is an actual photo of him wearing one, when demonstrating his method of printing to potential backers.
