Printle: A Printing Word Game from Metal Type

Franz

This mat was apparently a giveaway from L&M at the DRUPA printing fair 1986.

To me that seems very late for hot metal, and from what I know L&M was already diminished by that time, bravely run as a management by-out until 1991 or so.

Anyone having more insights, or even been to the DRUPA that year? When did L&M build their last Linotype?

Hi @Franz - Do you know what character they would produce?

A cap D for DRUPA? All of them?

I believe the last Linotype manufactured in England would have been the Elektron in 1976.

1986 marked 100 years since the Linotype machine entered the newspaper world -- the New York Tribune first integrated the machine into its operations in July 1886. Perhaps that is why they were given out, to mark 100 years.  For the machine's 100th centennial in 1986, Adobe designed a special serif font - Linotype Centennial.
