Hi Phillip, such a scheme is called a "type synopsis" you'll find more details here:

Hi all,

Here's a question:  Was there a standard quantity or proportion of monotype characters supplied from a type foundry, taking into account the frequency of the characters use?  i.e. more 'A's than 'Q's etc...

Any information would be gratefully received.

Cheers,
Philip
