Title: Reviving Signal Font
Post by: Dave Hughes on October 24, 2023, 06:35:23 PM
Ralf Herrmann, aka "Typography Guru" has launched a Kickstarter appeal to make the c1930s letterpress font "Signal" available in the digital era.

Says Ralf:

QuoteThe type family "Signal" was designed by Walter Wege and released during the 1930s by the foundry H. Berthold AG in Berlin. Its remarkable script design brought a mid-century lettering style—typically reserved for sign painters—into the realm of letterpress printing.

The type family became quite popular after its release. However, as typesetting technologies changed in the latter half of the 20th century, the Signal fonts were left behind and gradually faded into obscurity. Today, Signal is a cherished design among letterpress printers fortunate enough to possess some of the remaining letterpress fonts. But the design is hardly known by graphic designers and other users of digital fonts.

The project is already financially almost halfway towards its modest goal. It would be great to see it succeed, and perhaps I could use a little bit of it on this Forum when the digital version is produced!

Ralph has produced this video with more details of the project:

This project is now fully funded, and the digital font should be made available in 2024.
