This is Mergenthaler's 2nd Linotype. Of course it wasn't called Linotype at that time.

Yes, Called a "Band Machine" it is detailed on Metal Type here:

It's operation doesn't seem to be very well documented. The Encyclopaedia Britannica article just described the regular Linotype.

It looks like it would operate a little like the Paige Typesetter, with the matrices having to be slid or tilted back into their original position after each cast.

The machine originally on Metal Type would appear to be Merganthaler's first typesetting machine. The Encyclopedia Britannica photo is an improvement on the original. Below the machines are side by side for comparison

Got a pic of the second (and probably final) band machine on Metal Type as well.

Progress seems to have been rapid. First band machine 1884, second 1885, Blower 1886!

Difficult to track down details of how it operated though!

Mergenthaler must have indeed been a busy man. There are at least 3 band machines. The two on Metal Type and a third on Britanica. I have put the three side by side. They are definately three different machines.
