{"id":697,"date":"2017-06-13T17:40:57","date_gmt":"2017-06-13T16:40:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/metaltype.co.uk\/wpress\/?page_id=697"},"modified":"2023-01-23T00:40:35","modified_gmt":"2023-01-22T23:40:35","slug":"letterpress-limericks","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/metaltype.co.uk\/wpress\/letterpress-limericks\/","title":{"rendered":"Letterpress Limericks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A collection of print-related limericks sent in by Greg Fischer, who spent 42 years working on the Trentonian newspaper in Trenton, New Jersey, USA.<\/p>\n<p>A machinist who came from Timor<br \/>\nChanged magazines often before.<br \/>\nBut the lock wasn&#8217;t tight<br \/>\nTo the left, but was right.<br \/>\nAnd he dumped mats all over the floor.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>A Linotype man from L.A.<br \/>\nWas having a difficult day.<br \/>\nWith fingers abused<br \/>\nETAOIN was used<br \/>\nAnd SHRDLU brought into play.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>A newspaper man from LaCrosse<br \/>\nSaw his paper ran at a loss.<br \/>\nHe hollered &#8220;Oh No!<br \/>\nMy Hoe is too slow!&#8221;<br \/>\nAnd traded it in for a Goss.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>An Intertype gal from LeMans<br \/>\nSets type with both of her hands.<br \/>\nAnd sometimes her toes<br \/>\nAnd the tip of her nose.<br \/>\nWhatever production demands.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>A nasty old pressman I knew<br \/>\nGot to hell without much ado.<br \/>\nSatan said &#8220;You have sinned,&#8221;<br \/>\nAs he devilishly grinned<br \/>\n&#8220;What a press I&#8217;ve here waiting for you!&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>A German man quite laconic<br \/>\nWould print things only teutonic.<br \/>\nLike instructions for strudles<br \/>\nSauerbraten with noodles<br \/>\nAnd notes for the Bonn Philharmonic.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>A short-legged man from Seville<br \/>\nBuilt his shop on the side of a hill.<br \/>\nAfter printing away<br \/>\nFor a year and a day<br \/>\nHe discovered one leg shorter still.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>A printer who lives in Sudan<br \/>\nRuns his press just as fast as he can.<br \/>\nTo make matters worse<br \/>\nHe once ran in reverse<br \/>\nAnd finished before he began.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>A pressman who&#8217;s now in perdition<br \/>\nCame to work in a drunken condition.<br \/>\nHe fell in the press<br \/>\nWhich made quite a mess.<br \/>\nIt was surely his final edition.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>A fellow who worked in Pocasset<br \/>\nPrinted a job for the Knesset.<br \/>\nIt didn&#8217;t delight<br \/>\nFor it read left to right<br \/>\nWhich was backwards, but he didn&#8217;t guess it.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;My press&#8221; said a printer in Ghent<br \/>\n&#8220;Was pedaled so fast that it bent.<br \/>\nThis meddlesome treadle<br \/>\nUnsettled my mettle,<br \/>\nSo for one from John Hern I have sent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>At the Linotype he was quite new.<br \/>\nDid not know quite what to do.<br \/>\nA careless tight line<br \/>\nBrought a scream, then a whine<br \/>\nAs typemetal spattered his shoe.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>There once was a man from Luzerne<br \/>\nWho did printing carelessly learn.<br \/>\nWith a slip of the wrist<br \/>\nBy his press he was kissed<br \/>\nAnd he no longer can &#8220;Work and turn.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>A printer who worked in Lahore<br \/>\nHad legs all tired and sore.<br \/>\n&#8220;If I had but a Kimble<br \/>\nI could be quite nimble<br \/>\nFor I would treadle no more.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>A printer in Hades from Islet<br \/>\nSoon by the devil was met.<br \/>\nWho with eyes all agleam<br \/>\nSaid &#8220;Take this machine,<br \/>\nYou&#8217;ve an acre of agate to set.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>An engraver, an unhappy wretch<br \/>\nHad a problem he just couldn&#8217;t catch.<br \/>\nHe said &#8220;I don&#8217;t know<br \/>\nWhy this bath works so slow,<br \/>\nBut this looks like a seven year etch.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Be a six year apprentice&#8221; they said.<br \/>\n&#8220;With a permanent job just ahead.&#8221;<br \/>\nBut his joy soon diminished<br \/>\nAs soon as he finished.<br \/>\n&#8220;Going cold type, hot metal is dead!&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>A printer who worked in Bangkok<br \/>\nHad a turtle he kept in his shop.<br \/>\nNot the kind you might know<br \/>\nThat walks pretty slow<br \/>\nBut with wheels and cast iron top.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>An Intertype man from Alsace<br \/>\nWhen involved in a typesetting race,<br \/>\nYelled &#8220;I&#8217;ll win in a breeze!&#8221;<br \/>\nAs smoke rose from the keys<br \/>\nAnd he set a blistering pace.<br \/>\nHe set type in total confusion.<br \/>\nHis skills were just an illusion.<br \/>\nAnd one time he bent<br \/>\nWhere the elevator went<br \/>\nAnd suffered a massive contusion.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>A Linotype man, problematic<br \/>\nDrove the machinist quite frantic.<br \/>\nHe&#8217;d send a tight line<br \/>\nBut most of the time<br \/>\nHe was saved by the vise automatic.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>Miss Mary the old fashioned printer,<br \/>\nWhy printing was all she was inter.<br \/>\nWith arms all akimbo<br \/>\nThis robotic bimbo<br \/>\nWould quake from her front to her hinter!<\/p>\n<p>One day while treadling her press,<br \/>\nA gear caught her old-fashioned dress.<br \/>\nAs it got torn away<br \/>\nShe was heard to say<br \/>\n&#8220;I got caught, but I wasn&#8217;t impressed!&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>There once was a pressman from Bligh,<br \/>\nWho worked while wearing a tie.<br \/>\nAs the cylinder turned<br \/>\nHe suddenly learned<br \/>\nThe effect of type meeting the eye.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>A printer who worked in Des Moines<br \/>\nForgot to tighten a quoin.<br \/>\nAs the press went around<br \/>\nThe type fell to the ground<br \/>\nWhich he found extremely annoying.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>A Printer who came from Orleans<br \/>\nDisdained Italic it seems.<br \/>\n&#8220;I really hate<br \/>\nThat it won&#8217;t stand up straight.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m annoyed by the way that it leans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>A printer of art in Oshgosh<br \/>\nSaid his four-color job was a wash.<br \/>\nThe ink went to hell<br \/>\nBut they couldn&#8217;t tell<br \/>\nPicasso from Hieronymus Bosch<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>To save rent a printer from Brewer<br \/>\nSet up his shop in a sewer.<br \/>\nHe paid little rent<br \/>\nBut the jobs that he scent<br \/>\nMade his customers phewer and fewer<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>Of course he is getting slow.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s all that asbestos, you know.<br \/>\nAnd deadly pot fumes<br \/>\nIn hot little rooms<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s a wonder there aint no Mo!<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>A printer of old worked with lead.<br \/>\n&#8220;It&#8217;s bad for you!&#8221; it was said.<br \/>\nHe would cry with a jeer<br \/>\n&#8220;I&#8217;ll live many a year!&#8221;<br \/>\nBut at age 99 he was dead.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>There was a young lady from Rye<br \/>\nWho boiled some press parts in lye.<br \/>\nBut she had a mishap<br \/>\nSome spilled in her lap<br \/>\nAnd ate away part of her thigh.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>A printer from old Mandalay<br \/>\nTold of a most painful day.<br \/>\nHe started to pedal<br \/>\nOne foot under the treadle.<br \/>\nNow some toes will bend either way.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8211;::&#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>There once was a printer named Fred<br \/>\nWho had dirty rags up to his head.<br \/>\nWith a pile that high<br \/>\nAnd the EPA guy<br \/>\nHe now uses Kleenex instead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Did you enjoy these limericks? <\/strong>If so, you may be interested to know that they appear in <a href=\"http:\/\/metaltype.co.uk\/wpress\/printers-tales\/\"><strong>&#8220;Printers&#8217;
