Greg Fischer sent in this poem, which is about a Linotype operator, written from the point of view of a Linotype mechanic on a daily newspaper.<\/p>\n

Over the idle Linotype<\/em>
\nthe Lino machinist stands.<\/em>
\nNot a brain within his head<\/em>
\njust large and horny hands.<\/em><\/p>\n

Each morning late to work he comes,<\/em>
\neach evening early goes.<\/em>
\nNothing accomplished, nothing done.<\/em>
\nhis thoughts are of repose.<\/em><\/p>\n

Layered with cobwebs, covered with dust,<\/em>
\nlonely his toolbox stands.<\/em>
\nWhile inside, tools covered with rust,<\/em>
\nuntouched by human hands.<\/em><\/p>\n

A mid-morning snooze, an afternoon nap,<\/em>
\nsurely better things to do.<\/em>
\nThen to tug away on a greasy old wrench<\/em>
\nor oil a thing or two.<\/em><\/p>\n

The mats won’t drop, the pump won’t pump,<\/em>
\nthe slugs fall on the floor.<\/em>
\n“I’ll get it later, take another machine!”<\/em>
\n“You’ve got eleven more!”<\/em><\/p>\n

So cheer the old machinists,<\/em>
\nthough their numbers now are few.<\/em>
\nAnd thanks to Ottmar’s great design<\/em>
\nthey did less than most of you!<\/em><\/p>\n
