Printle: A Printing Word Game from Metal Type

Fjeld-Ljom

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to inform you all that the Council of Europe and European Commission has given us a grant amounting to 9,900 euros for Letterpress training, preserving old printing techniques as outlined in our application submitted to the European Heritage Days Stories. Our story can be read here:
https://www.europeanheritagedays.com/Story/The-predigital-newspaper-and-printing-house

Our plan is to use the entire grant on bringing skilled line casting technicians together with recruits interested in learning how to operate Linotype and Intertype machines, and how to maintain the machinery. Our goal is to contribute to establishing an informal group of machine experts willing to share their know-how and also interested in contributing to on-site missions at museums or private collectors in need of help to keep their linecasting machines in working order.

At the AEPM meeting in Germany this year, we learned that a number of museums have working machinery, but at the same time are facing problems with maintenance and repair. We want to contribute to establish a sort of task force with experts willing to work across European borders.

We are planning three training sessions / meetings. The first two will take place in Røros, Norway, at the Press Museum Fjeld-Ljom, where we have four working machines, and even some extra machines as source of spare parts. Due to a late decision from the Council of Europa, the first meeting will come up rather soon.

Here are the dates:
Session one: Week 30, 24th to 29th of July.
Session two: Week 40, 2nd to 7th of October
A third session will be held in March 2024: the exact date is still to be decided. We are open for locating this session somewhere in central Europe.
The grant of €9,900 will be used to partly pay for travel and accommodation costs for participants that otherwise could not will afford to take part in the project. For practical reasons we have to limit the number of participants to around five persons in each session.

Grants for coverage of costs, will be decided on an individual basis, based on application (see below). And due to the limited amount of fundings, we hope that all the participants will be able to contribute with coverage of some of their own costs.

For those interested, please respond to this as soon as possible.

Best regards,
