Printle: A Printing Word Game from Metal Type

Dave Hughes

This 1891 typesetting competition, organised by the American Newspaper Publishers' Association, aimed to test the viability of the various typesetting machines that were available at that time.

There is a small article about the competition on the main Metal Type website here: 1891 Typesetting Competition

This article appeared in the 9th edition of the Inland Printer, which has recently been made available online by the Smithsonian Libraries. It can be found here, along with the first 70 issues: Smithsonian Libraries: Inland Printer

The in-depth report of the competition includes illustrations of all the machines, as well as a sample of the type they were capable of producing.

Great find! I love these competitions.

Very happy to see the first 70 volumes digitized by the LOC.
