Printle: A Printing Word Game from Metal Type

There is much talk at the moment about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the impact it will have on people's jobs.

At the risk of speaking too soon, I can't see any danger of AI taking over the running of this website in the near future.

There is an account on Twitter (now X) called HistorAI which recently published the picture below to commemorate the invention of the Monotype system:

I rest my case . . .

But who will know? How many people know how a Monotype looks like today, in 50 years, in 100... Who will be able to select the real thing from the noise? I find this scary. See below "model" of a printing press that you can order and assemble. They even market it as a tribute to metal type printing. I think, we are entering new dark ages, just now they are no longer dark, but plain white, overexposed.

It will be tough to teach against this.

As an experiment I got AI to create a couple of pictures of typesetting machines that I used on another thread. The results were very strange. "Frankenstein machines" springs to mind!

Wow, the press pictured above in #1 is a functioning one, as seen in this video!

The unrealistic sound effects add a new dimension!
