Congratulations fo Dr Steve Hewett
Congratulations go to Dr Steve Hewett on his recent successful doctoral viva. His thesis 'The Civic Gospel and Municipal Culture: Birmingham's Free Libraries, 1851 to 1898' is an investigation of one municipal authority through the lens of its embryonic public library service. It is an urban and social history, exploring the frequently overlooked contribution public libraries made to the growth of civic cultural landscapes.

Small Performances: an interlude
On 4 March, almost two years to the day since 'Small Performance: investigating the typographic punches of John Baskerville through heritage, science and practice-based research' was launched in the Library of Birmingham in 2024, the research team took a pause from their work and gathered once again at LoB for 'Small Performances: an interlude'. This half-day event provided an update on the project, its research, discoveries, outputs and impact and its aims and activities
over the coming year. We were pleased to welcome around 60 guests not only from Birmingham but also the wider region and further afield, many of whom have supported Baskerville research since the establishment of the Baskerville Society in 2012 and were keen to hear what we had been up to.

WINTERBOURNE HOUSE AND GARDEN
Rubber stamps and Letraset: how we used to do it
At Winterbourne House and Garden, working with undergraduate and postgraduate students is one of the perks of the job. We're always delighted when tutors come to us asking for access to our museum collections, and students on a wide range of courses have engaged in object-based learning here.'Turning the Pages' is a module offered to Art History students at the University of Birmingham. It aims to introduce students to the history of printing and the process of making books. The Winterbourne Press was the obvious destination for a visit, and the group had a demonstration from Lee Hale on some of our historic printing presses. They saw the process at first hand, from composing type and 'locking up' to inking and printing and also viewed our enormous Heidelberg press and Linotype machine.

A colleague in Chicago is undertaking research on William Jardine's The Naturalist's Library, originally published in Edinburgh by W. H. Lizars from 1833 to 1843 and re-issued many times since. Included in the large 40-volume set are many beautiful illustrations that were originally carved on steel plates. They are wondering if any of these steel plates might still exist. Any informationwelcome. In the first instance please contact .
