Printle: A Printing Word Game from Metal Type

Mechanic

Parallel Imp's posting on" Matrix repair or new" reminded me that Intertype had a unique way to compete with Ludlow. Intertype marketed a stick attachment. The first elevator head was hinged and by using the special stick and spacebands, mats were composed by hand from a cabinet similar to ones used by Ludlow, sizes from 5 to 48 point could be cast. It takes advantage of the fact that the Intertype mold caps can be changed without removing the bottom part. This system provided larger type without the need to purchase  a headline machine. Italic mats were cut on an angle so that they were kerned to give a good typographic appearance.

"OOPS" another senior moment I see it has been posted before. The patent application may be of interest.
