Believe it or not it's coming up to the two-year anniversary of Doug starting research for this book.

His latest research has taken him to the UK to check the history of the UK Linotype company.

Here's some great stuff that he has come across:

Doug's really whetting my appetite for his forthcoming book!

He's recently visited the New York Public Library and uncovered some early publicity for the machines.

One of the advertisements included this rather controversial claim:

In Doug's latest email update (No. 14) he shares a Flickr album which contains some pictures from the Linotype "scrapbooks" he has been taking a look at in New York.

Doug's currently carrying out his research at St. Bride's Library, London and has unearthed these treasures:

Doug's back at the New York Public Library, and assisted by Jacob Ford, for his latest book research:

Doug's paid another visit to St. Bride's Library in London to research his book. He has come up with some great stuff, including this picture of a lady wearing a Linotype dress!

Unfortunately, he posted his pictures on Instagram as a "story" so for technical reasons I'm unable to make them viewable on the Forum. You'll have to go over to Instagram to view them there: St. Bride #4.

It's been a while since I've posted any updates from Doug, but I think this visit to the Smithsonian will be worth waiting for! Can't wait to see what he finds!

I also think Doug is coming to the end of the research phase for his book.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Doug discovers at the Smithsonian as he nears the end of his research for Linotype: The Book.

Doug has finished his research at the Smithsonian now and has posted some very interesting stuff on Instagram.

As well as the "Smithsonian 1" link in the post above there is now Smithsonian 2 and Smithsonian 3. There's some great stuff there, well worth a look through.

Some of the highlights for me were:

Linotype's version of the early Intertype Fotosetter, which was quickly forgotten about!

Mat distribution from a German machine.

The Blower keyboard.

And finaly . . .

The Smithsonian's elusive "Blower" when it was on display.
I'm not sure if the grey electric motor is contemporary!
