QuoteIn the early 1960s American television anthology series 'The Twilight Zone,' episode 111, titled 'Printer's Devil,' tells the gripping story of Douglas Winter, an earnest and struggling newspaper editor of The Dansburg Courier. Faced with impending bankruptcy and personal despair, Douglas considers suicide but is interrupted by a mysterious man named Mr. Smith, portrayed by Burgess Meredith. Mr. Smith, who exhibits uncanny skills as a linotype operator and reporter, offers Douglas a loan to save the failing newspaper and begins producing sensational stories that boost The Courier's circulation. Douglas's fortunes change overnight, but suspicions arise, particularly from his girlfriend and sole remaining staff member, Jackie Benson. As it becomes increasingly clear that Mr. Smith's knowledge of news events borders on the supernatural, Douglas learns the sinister truth: Mr. Smith is the Devil himself, and in exchange for his help, demands Douglas's soul. Caught in a web of malicious manipulation, Douglas decides to confront Mr. Smith and ultimately outsmarts him using the enchanted linotype machine. He writes a story that renders their demonic contract void and results in Mr. Smith's disappearance. In the end, Douglas has the infernal linotype machine destroyed, resuming control over his life and newspaper, free from the diabolical influence.
