Printle: A Printing Word Game from Metal Type

Dave Hughes

Over on the Coins and Medals topic @printsmurf recently made this post showing metal tokens used in a promotion for the Cleveland Leader newspaper.

I know it's a bit of a long shot but does anyone remember the promotion? Were the tokens given away with the newspaper? I'm guessing there must have been some circulation battle raging at the time of the promotion.

It reminds me of the "Bingo Mania" that afflicted UK newspapers back in the 1980s. At that time Rupert Murdoch's "Sun" was in a circulation war with crooked Robert Maxwell's "Daily Mirror."

Interesting that the Mirror front page is about a yachting accident involving 1980s pop star Simon Le Bon. Pension thief Mirror proprietor Robert Maxwell came to a sticky end when he fell off his luxury yacht whilst urinating over the side after a drinking session. How the other half live (and die)!
