The New Daily

The New Daily, Australia's first digital free news media has been launched. The New Daily is a general news website funded by Australia's major superannuation funds. This has caused  concern among some members of the super funds.

Currently Australia's newspapers are charging to read their digital editions. I've had a cursory look at The New Daily site and found it a little slow to respond, when a story that maybe of interested is clicked on. If The New Daily can attract advertising away from the traditional newspapers, they might be on a winner.

And, of course, not having the "Hand of Murdoch" at the helm has got to be a bonus!

The Global Mail was an earlier entrant in this category funded in a similar way but it wasn't a daily and featured more long form material. Early editions had an interesting layout http://goo.gl/OxWOcZ which presented really well on larger monitors but wasn't popular with the majority and is now more traditional http://www.theglobalmail.org.

https://theconversation.com is another one with a difference. The authors are university staff who are required to disclose their research interests. Professional sub editors make the stories digestible to a larger audience.
