Printle: A Printing Word Game from Metal Type

Forum member Jörgen Loot @Jorgen from Estonia recently posted this video of his composition caster in action on Instagram. It appears to be operating from a paper spool. I may be wrong, but I thought most operated from a computer interface these days.

Hi, yes the composition caster at TYPA is ran off a paper spool  :)  They have a Monotype Keyboard, and they also have a punching unit which is ran off a computer interface (which I believe to be an early McIntosh model).

I was a participant on a Monotype Training course which took place at TYPA, and I have worked with this caster and the keyboard. I did not see the punching unit in action.

The second video you shared is from my instagram - Liam_Letterpress. The video is from when I was in Estonia.

I am usually based in Ireland, where I volunteer with the National Print Museum in Dublin. We have a Monotype Keyboard and a Composition Caster in Dublin. And at 27 years old, it is my passion to learn the Monotype system. When I heard about the training programme at TYPA, I was so excited to take part. Jorgen at TYPA is a very skilled Monotype man, and his machine is beautifully maintained. I can only hope one day to be even half as knowledgeable as Jorgen, and it was a pleasure to be taught by him and work with his machines.

Best wishes,
Liam
