Fotosetter Patent - English or American?

Printle: A Printing Word Game from Metal Type


Does this mean that the Fotosetter is an English invention or were the Americans just covering their backsides?
This is an extract from The New Scientist 1978
The document where I found this gave the date as 1938. I tried to check the patent number without success.
