When I submitted this post I was concentrating on hand and early presses, now that I have expanded to include all presses that I can find here is an accompanying stamp to the one posted.

Issued in 2012 which makes this an illegal stamp.      Due to political conflicts stamp production virtually ceased for the Ivory Coast. In 2008 two stamps were officially issued. After that it was not until 2013 that any more official stamps were issued for the Ivory Coast according to the WNS system.
When Leonardo Da Vinci was born, a printing press already existed, invented in 1450 by Johannes Gutenberg. Although it was very unpredictable, didn't work very well and was quite noisy. Da Vinci however, thought of two more designs, both worked better as they had a double thread which enabled the press to travel further for each turn made of the lever. An automatic bed connected to a pressure system enabled the printer to print and move the sheet of paper in one operation by moving a lever on the front. It was invented in 1478. The stamp shows part of the mechanism.

printsmurf

The souvenir sheet has a line drawing of a Linotype or Intertype so is quite unusual

Bit of a strange one this.........stamp issued on 17 December 1970 to commemorate the Death Centenary of Saverio Mercadante (1795-1870) who was a composer. but used on a First Day Cover to honour Francesco Marcolini(c. 1500—1559), an Italian printer and typefounder. There was no stamp honouring Marcolini issued to go with this First Day Cover

The Mainz Psalter was printed in 1457 by Fust and Schöffer on Gutenberg's press. It is a remarkable book: the first to be printed in colour, the first to use two sizes of type, the first to bear a printer's mark and the first to carry the date of its printing. Johann Fust was Gutenberg's financer and provided substantial loans to the printer. In 1455 he foreclosed on the loans and took possession of the press in settlement of the debts. He then entered into a printing partnership with Peter Schöffer.

This propaganda set was issued by the Polish Underground Solidarity Movement as a diversification statement against martial law which had been declared by the Communist Authorities in Poland. The underground members who issued this stamp risked a lot because if caught they would have been imprisoned without trial.
